The Warning Signs Of Gum Disease

Many of us have heard that we need to be aware of gum disease, which can lead to teeth falling out and put us at risk for serious health conditions. But other than proper oral hygiene, like brushing & flossing regularly, most people don’t know what to look for and how to know if gum disease is becoming a problem in their mouth.

This can be even more serious, because most of the time, gum disease does not cause pain or tenderness during its early stages, when it’s the easiest to treat. So what is a person supposed to look for to know if they have a problem with gum disease?

First, check for any swelling in your gums, or any bleeding after you brush your teeth. If you have bleeding & swelling, your gums are inflamed and gum disease might be the culprit. This is especially true if it happens more than once. Then you should check your gum line to see if your gums might be receding. The best way to do this is just to notice if your teeth look longer – if they do, your gum line is moving farther up the tooth, making your teeth look longer. This is an early indicator of gum disease.

The next sign to watch for is if your teeth feel loose or not as supported. Gum disease attacks the support structure of your teeth, and if they begin to feel loose, make an appointment with a Bay Area periodontist immediately to discuss treatment.
