What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?
Gum disease (periodontitis) is the advanced stage of gingivitis. It is a disease that affects the tissues surrounding the gums and teeth. It also affects the bone and the socket that holds the teeth in. There are symptoms of gum disease that can be identified by you and checked out by your dentist.
These symptoms of gum disease could be:
If you experience any of these symptoms, see your dentist. Your dentist or hygienist will check your teeth and gums for the looseness of your teeth. They will check to see if there is any difference in spacing or how your teeth fit together.
The early stages of periodontitis are easily treated with a procedure to remove the bacteria and infected tissue to allow the gums to heal themselves. When the infected tissues are sufficiently removed, the disease can be eradicated. Of course, with more advanced stages of periodontitis, the procedures are a bit more complicated.
To prevent gingivitis and eventually periodontitis, maintain good oral hygiene habits. Brush after each meal, or at least twice a day. Replace your toothbrush regularly to insure the maximum cleaning potential. Floss daily! Most importantly, see a Bay Area periodontist for regular checkups to keep your teeth and gums in tip top shape.
