Sulfa Related Drugs Cause Allergies In Many People
When people talk about sulfa drugs, they’re talking about sulfonamide. Sulfonamide is the basis of several groups of drugs. Some of these drugs are based on antibacterial activity and some are not.
One of the problems with sulfa related drugs is that many of them cause allergies in many people. Although those with a sulfa drug allergy can experience a variety of symptoms – skin rashes and fever are the predominant ones normally associated with this allergy.
A lesser reactions, especially in people that have asthma, is to cause wheezing and possibly trigger an asthma attack. And some people have been known to experience sulfa allergy symptoms such as tissue swelling, especially in the throat area.
Drugs based on sulfonamide make up a significant percentage of all the drugs in the U.S. making it difficult for those with allergies.
