‘Join the navy and see the world’, a slogan once beckoned young men and women. Since World War II, with the spread of U.S. military bases in 150 countries, military travel is almost inevitable to anyone who joins. For those who would like to live in a foreign country for a year or two, to live in a new culture, to live as they do, the U.S. military might very well be your ticket to ride.The destinations of today’s soldier, marine, or sailor overseas are not only those countries where the U.S. is conducting military operations of war. Even those who do ship to a middle eastern country to fight in war are not totally deprived of the benefits of travel overseas. Iraq and Afghanistan, for instance, are steeped in culture and a history that goes back to the dawn of civilization.
