By nature, teenagers are risk takers. Part of their feeling of invincibility is the reason they experiment with dangerous and illegal drugs and alcohol.

It is my firm belief that during the formative years, any teen can benefit from drug classes. This is the time when they are both experimenting with drugs and forming life-long beliefs about both drugs and alcohol.

As a counselor for both in class and online minor in possession classes I often discuss the idea of taking the drug class as a part of their high school curriculum. We discuss how taking a drug class might affect their decisions in experimenting with drugs and alcohol.

Almost unanimously, students’ opinions on drugs changed over the 8-hour drug class. Students already are bombarded with information about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. They learn how much more likely they are to develop a proclivity for future addiction by starting at an early age.

21st Annual Fly-for-Tots Charity Fundraising Event, Raleigh NC

A special event will take place once again in 2011 as the 21st annual Fly-for-Tots Charity Fundraising event takes place in Raleigh, North Carolina. This once-a-year event is sponsored by the Raleigh Durham Radio Club and features three days of food, flying remote controlled airplanes, fun and fundraising for children with special needs.

A major draw for spectators is that you can pull up a lounge chair, find you some shade and watch big boys (men) return to their childhood toys. Except this time those toys are huge, acrobatic RC airplanes that seem to defy gravity. Even the kids can find adventure at the RDRC RC event.* RC planes fly overhead for the much-awaited “Candy Drop.” Adults get in on the act, purchase raffle tickets, and drool over the prizes donated by vendors such as Horizon Hobbies, Xtreme Guru, and a bevy of private and commercial companies.

In 2011, the RC club raised over $27,000. This year, RC sponsors hope to top that amount.
